Erydu – Erosion, Wil Rowlands

Erydu – Erosion, Wil Rowlands

Sunday, 13 May to Sunday, 24 June 2018

Wil sees the pervasiveness of erosion in everything about us, yet as things gradually disappear, something else takes its place. Wil responds to that change in land, people, place, language and the passage of time. Experimentation with a need to find the unexpected is at the heart of Wil’s way of working, a way that often leads to humour and pathos and a questioning emotion.

Borrowed Light

Borrowed Light: Annie Morgan Suganami

Sunday, 29 July – Sunday, 2 September 2018

The title comes from an architectural term that refers to light entering a dark interior space from an adjacent room or area that has a window. The artist will explore this metaphor.

Annie's work is her response to the state of the planet, the effects of global warming, both environmentally and politically. This constant backdrop to her life intensifies her need to live as fully and as kindly as possible. Annie’s small sculptures, her work in fragile paper and her pieces about the landscape directly relate to humankind’s current, darkened state. ‘We need beauty now more than ever.’

Part of this exhibition is the result of Annie’s work as an artist in residence at Oriel Brondanw in 2018.

Artist in Residence: Annie Morgan Suganami

Artist in Residence: Annie Morgan Suganami

Monday, 21 May to Sunday, 1 July 2018

In this residency Annie hopes to allow herself the freedom to pursue different ways of working, and of responding through materials that she doesn’t normally use. Nevertheless her paintings will still be present.

Working in the old bedroom
Annie will mostly be working with materials that over the years she has wanted to explore further, but painting somehow prevented her from doing so. These weeks at Oriel Brondanw will allow her to focus less on her oil paints and figurative work and let her to concentrate on 3D pieces and drawing. Her aim is to focus on experimentation, improvisation and play, which will include air-drying clay, twigs, branches and paper.

This residency, later this year, will form part of Annie Morgan Suganami’s exhibition at Oriel Brondanw entitled ‘Borrowed Light’.

Annie will endeavour to be available to viewers during her residency so that her work may be discussed, but that cannot be guaranteed regularly. Should you want to talk to her specifically we recommend setting up an appointment by contacting post@susanwilliamsellis.org or 01766 770590

Artist in Residence: Sian Hughes

8/7/19 - 18/8/19

From her base at Oriel Brondanw Sian Hughes this July and August will be doing field work for her project Fragments in Time.

Sian works with porcelain clay rolling it paper thin and pressing it into the landscape. She is planning to use this process to make impressions from plants, geology, industrial remains and elements of the Traeth Mawr. When these fired fragile pieces are lit from behind, captured layers of objects and history will emerge.

You will have a chance to meet Sian and learn more about her work in progress. Look out for dates nearer the time to find out when she is available.

Should you want to talk to her specifically we recommend setting up an appointment by contacting post@susanwilliamsellis.org or 01766 770 590

Sian’s project has been funded by a ‘Research and Development’ grant awarded by the following bodies:

Crossing the Sands

'Crossing the Sands' - Maps in the Library

Sunday, 8 September to Sunday, 20 October 2019

A selection of old maps relating to this part of the world. This exhibition will be opened with a talk by Mike Parker, author of Map Addict, Mapping The Roads, On the Red Hill and more. Maps: combining the functional with the decorative.

This exhibition will be opened with a talk by Mike Parker, author of Map Addict, Mapping The Roads, On the Red Hill and more.

The Traeth Mawr and Traeth Bach estuaries, either side of Plas Brondanw, were major topographical features on the earliest of maps, and major travel obstacles. Although the Ogilby strip map of 1675 shows a path across the ‘Sands’ the shrewd knew that the wise course was to use ferries or guides. The memory of the splendour of the lost three mile estuary of the Traeth Mawr – on the shores of which Plas Brondanw would have stood for almost 250 years – still hangs over the area, and the older maps in this small exhibition remind us of the change that Madocks brought about in 1811 with the building of the Cob.

All seats have been reserved by now.
Note that Mike Parker’s talk will commence at 1.30pm and not 2.00pm, our usual time.

A hundred years on from her birth Oriel Brondanw takes a look at the various phases of Susan Williams-Ellis’ life in art, illustration and commerce.

Susan Williams-Ellis is best known for her Portmeirion Pottery but there is more to her artistic life than the innovative ceramics. At different times in her career Susan found artistic expression in commissioned and non-commissioned illustration, in painting, in clothes, fabric and furniture design, and even in masks. She left a vast amount of sketches and various items which inspired her work, all of which throw light and shade on her life as the first-born child of landed and eminent parents, and as an individual striving to find her voice.

Fragile Landscapes

'Fragile Landscapes', Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales: Celebrating the work of 90 years

Sunday, 1 July to Sunday, 22 July 2018

An exhibition consisting of loaned paintings, photographs and other original pieces of art, all telling their tale of how different our country would be if it were not for the efforts of this pressure group that Clough Williams-Ellis helped to establish and promote.

Clough Williams-Ellis, Plas Brondanw’s remarkable guardian was one of the founders of Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales and for many years one of its most influential members. It was therefore fitting for Oriel Brondanw to make room in its timetable to help CPRW celebrate 90 years of work. The exhibition consists of loaned paintings, photographs and other original pieces of art, all telling their tale of how different our country would be if it were not for the efforts of this body.
